English media's idea of a football headline funny:Big-name defender awaits Rovers debut
The big-name defender, by the way, is a Georgian named Zurab Khizanishvili. Count 'em, 13 letters long.
This isn't the longest surname in football, mind you, although Ruud van Nistelrooy has his "van" contracted to a "v." on his United shirt. No, the current holder of the longest surname goes to one Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who plays for PSV Eindhoven. Goodness knows how PSV fitted his whole surname onto the back of his shirt - which, by the way, they did.
But if anyone wants to worry about Khizanishvili's long name barely fitting onto his shirt, there's no necessity to worry. This English football watcher remembers the brief career of another Georgian footballer, who had played for Manchester City back in the mid-90s. The lad's name was Mikhail Kavelashvili. Count 'em again - 12 letters. And City just about fitted his name onto the shirt. Kavelashvili even scored for City against United, although (as usual) the red half of Manchester won the day.
So Khizanishvili should find his name fitting quite nicely, especially when you consider his name has four I's to the City player's two, which means there's space to save from cramming the letters closer together.
I wish Khizanishvili a good career in the Premiership, though definitely not ever at United's expense. But Blackburn Rovers don't play United that soon. We've got City to think about today.
