Jimmy Davis (1983-2003)

Lesley Manyathela (1981-2003)

It is eerie coincidence that, hours after hearing about 21-year-old Jimmy Davis' death from a car crash while on his way to Watford, news comes in that another striker, incidentally also 21 years old, died in another country, also from a car accident, except this happened after a game.

Cynics may dismiss their deaths as an unpleasant by-product of football's rise in profile, preferring to believe that the youths who get lured into the big-time started to get their egos a little inflated, resulting in the fast cars and the high life. Now, while Davis was reportedly driving his BMW 3-series, we should not take this to necessarily mean anything. He was, after all, driving to work.

Let not the make of either player's car allow us to stop ourselves from doing the right thing, which is to mourn and grieve for the loss of two more excellent talents who could have graced the world football stage. Indeed, Manyathela was performing very well for Bafana Bafana, and who knows where Davis could have gone after a good loan spell at Swindon?

Coupled with the loss of top coach Ray Harford to cancer, this has been a black weekend for football.
